In our Advanced Visual Design class with Sabio, The Glad Scientist, we were asked to come up with two creative designs. The very simple task got me thinking in a couple of alternatives I want to continue exploring.
I named one of them: Break the Flow.
In my photography, water has always been a constant. I just love to photograph water landscapes. Calm and rough. It just brings me all sorts of emotions. So I thought I could apply some of the digital art techniques to a selection of these photographs.
I have a lot to choose from:
- Water
Here is the creative design:
Base Concept
Bring a small series of water landscape images to life by simulating water movement that gradually becomes unpredictable. And then, break the rules until the flow escapes the frame.
Aesthetic
Simulation of water flowing. The starting point is an image of a natural landscape with water. As the simulation progresses it may take this water to unexpected behaviours or places, within or even out of the image.
Medium
Audiovisual installation on a large screen (single-channel).
Presentation: dark room, minimal ambient light; audience standing or seated with a clear frontal view.
Output: one 16:9 projection or LED screen with smooth motion.
Audio: stereo or quad speakers; sound designed to drive the “flow breaking” moments (subtle → intense).
System: real-time setup (e.g., TouchDesigner) with image-based water simulation + particle/advect layers; parameters can be automated or controlled live.
Optional: subtle interactivity (mic / room noise / proximity) to push the water beyond the frame.
